Dan Ariely has long studied the rules of exchange between people across different contexts.
He often uses a classic example to illustrate this dynamic:
If, during a family dinner—an event traditionally governed by kinship and gratitude—someone suddenly and earnestly announces, “I will pay market price for this meal,” the atmosphere collapses instantly.
Not because the math is wrong.
But because it forcibly shifts a scenario operating on kinship into a transaction.
What changed? That invisible line—the one that shatters the moment you step on it.
Ariely found that human interaction operates on two entirely different sets of rules.
The first is social norms. Kinship, friendship, and neighborhood relations rely on this. The core logic: I help you not because you will pay me back, but because we are family. We don’t keep score.
The second is market norms. Commerce, employment, and business partnerships rely on this. The core logic: You get what you pay for. Fair exchange.
When these two sets of rules operate independently, everything functions smoothly.
But the moment you introduce market norms into a social norm context—even for a split second—the social norm shatters. And the damage is almost irreversible.
Ariely conducted an experiment where he asked groups of people to help move a sofa. One group received nothing; the other received a small financial reward. The unpaid group worked harder and was in better spirits. The paid group, however, began to calculate whether “this amount of money was worth the effort.”
To put it bluntly: Once you apply transactional logic to kinship, the kinship itself retreats.
The exact moment a relative asks to borrow money is the moment these two norms collide.
For instance, a relative suddenly asks for a significant loan.
Two programs start running simultaneously in your mind—
Social norms dictate: This is family. We support each other. It seems unjustifiable not to help.
Market norms dictate: Fifty thousand is not a small sum. Do they have the capacity to repay? Should I demand an IOU? What is the repayment timeline?
You want to apply both.
Ariely’s research yields a blunt answer: No.
You must choose one.
If you choose social norms—you lend the money and never mention repayment—you preserve the kinship, but you will keep a mental ledger. That ledger will not disappear; it will surface at every family gathering, subtly altering how you look at them.
If you choose market norms—you lend the money, but require an IOU and a strict deadline—you protect yourself. But the other party might think: “Is this really necessary? Aren’t we family?” From that moment on, a new layer is permanently added to the relationship.
Therefore, the real question is not “to lend or not to lend.”
The real question is: Which set of norms do you intend to use to maintain this relationship?
If you decide this is a relationship based purely on kinship, then mentally treat the money you lend as a gift. Repayment is a pleasant surprise; non-repayment is the baseline expectation. You will not resent them, because you never treated it as a transaction to begin with.
If you determine that the relationship cannot bear this financial weight—meaning lending it will make you uncomfortable, and default will breed resentment—then a direct, honest refusal is actually the best way to protect the relationship.
Not every “no” is an act of coldness. Sometimes, “no” is how you hold the line for the sake of the relationship.
Ariely also discovered an interesting dynamic: those refused a loan may be upset in the short term, but the long-term damage to the relationship is nowhere near as severe as “lending the money and chasing them for it every day.”
Debt collection is the ultimate marker of a total collapse in social norms.
You might assume “just lend it for now” is the safest option. In reality, it is exactly the opposite. If you lend the money before getting clear on which norm applies, every subsequent step becomes a minefield.
The next time someone asks, do not rush to calculate the math.
Pause for three seconds and ask yourself one question:
Based on this person’s place in my life, which set of rules should govern my response?
Once the answer is clear, the financial decision becomes simple.
